Anglo Colonization of Texas

Beginning in the 1820s, settlers from the United States began arriving in Texas, which was then part of Mexico. The articles in this section cover the history of this migration (1820s-1830s). Known to Texan historians as “Anglos” or “Texians” (in contrast to native Spanish-speaking Tejanos, Blacks, and Indians), the early Anglo-American settlers eventually rebelled from Mexico and created the Republic of Texas. The Anglo Texans are among the forebears of the “White” American ethnicity, as it is known today, though that racial concept did not exist in exactly the same way at the time.
