Mexican Texas (1821–1836)

After gaining independence from Spain, Mexico inherited the vast and sparsely populated territory of Texas, which it joined with Coahuila to form the state of Coahuila y Tejas. To secure the frontier and stimulate the economy, the new government permitted Anglo-American immigration through land grants and empresario contracts.
