The Courthouse Era (1875-1900)
After Reconstruction, Texas counties gained unprecedented authority under the state’s new constitution. Courthouses rose across the state as symbols of civic order and rural independence. New county and state institutions developed, and railroads were built across vast distances. However, the era was marred by lawlessness on the frontier, and the rise of Jim Crow oppression and racial violence in the settled east.
