The Texas Veterans Land Board operates four veterans cemeteries, offers financial services to veterans, and runs long-term care homes for veterans.
The VLB is part of the Texas General Land Office and was created by the Texas Legislature in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, in order to make land available to returning veterans.
Today, the organization finances land, home loans, and home improvement loans for Texas veterans and active military members who are eligible under VLB requirements.
The Veterans Land Loan Program gives Texas veterans and military members the opportunity to borrow money to purchase land at favorable interest rates and terms. The VLB will finance any tract of land containing at least one acre, with dedicated access to a public roadway.
The VLB also offers a home improvement program to finance repairs and improvements to existing homes.
Veterans Homes
The Texas State Veterans Home Program provides long-term care to veterans and their spouses in eight veterans homes across Texas.
State veterans homes are regulated by both the Texas Health and Human Services Commissionas well as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Third-party operators manage the day-to-day operations of the veterans homes.
The Veterans Land Board oversees the operators and has an on-site representative in each veterans home.
Governance
The Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office serves as Chairman of the Board of the Veterans Land Board and is joined by two citizen members appointed by the governor.
